Turf Systems, Base & Drainage

A synthetic turf field is a complete construction system. The visible turf depends on a stable foundation and a drainage route that continues beyond the edge of the field. Turf Our Field helps Oklahoma owners plan these components around the site and intended sports.

The layers beneath the playing surface

  1. Prepared subgrade: Existing grass, unsuitable materials and excess soil are addressed. Grading and compaction establish the foundation.

  2. Separation and stabilization: Geotextile and, where specified, geogrid help manage soil separation and support. They are selected for site conditions.

  3. Aggregate base: Designed stone layers provide structural support and may carry water toward collection drains.

  4. Finish layer: A graded leveling layer supports consistent surface elevations and turf installation.

  5. Drainage collection and outlet: Pipes, collectors and an approved discharge route move water away from the system.

  6. Turf, infill and optional pad: These are selected together for the sport and performance requirements.

Does perforated turf solve drainage?

Perforations allow water to pass through the turf backing. They do not fix a poorly graded site, an undersized collection system or a blocked outlet. Drainage planning must consider soils, rainfall, elevations, nearby runoff and the final discharge point.

Can we use the same base design everywhere?

No. A base section that suits one field may be unsuitable for another. Soil conditions, groundwater, loading, grading and local requirements affect the design. Engineering and geotechnical review should be included where the project requires them.

Converting an existing grass field

Evaluate the existing grades, utilities, access, fencing and drainage before pricing a conversion. Reusing parts of an existing base or drainage system requires inspection; an existing field is not automatically a ready-made turf foundation.

Questions to ask before comparing proposals

  • What excavation, stone types, depths and compaction are included?

  • Where does collected water discharge, and who handles downstream work?

  • Are unsuitable soils, utility conflicts and testing included or allowances?

  • Which turf, infill, pad, markings and maintenance requirements are specified?
